DIY PACKING CUBES VELVET

DIY fathers day

Tomorrow I’m off to Barcelona with my friends! I am so excited. Like over the top excited. Been googling restaurants, things to do and the weather almost every day, haha. When I made the velvet pouf I didn’t use all the fabric, and figure I could make packing cubes for the trip instead of throwing it! Tag a long and I’ll show you step by step how to DIY packing cubes!

DIY packing cubes

What you need to make the packing cubes

  • Sewing machine
  • Zipper
  • Scissor
  • Fabric

This is what you need to make the “base” of the packing cubes. But I wanted to add some details, like the letters and another zipper that’s shaped like a feather. And therefor, I also needed these things:

  • Iron-on-letters (optional)
  • Iron (optional, but for the letters)
  • Ring eyelets
  • Feather (or whichever symbol you like) pendants

The ring eyelets and pendants I went to a craft store that had a lot of ‘jewelry making’ stuff.

Step 1

Cut the fabric as big as you want the packing cubes to be, and don’t forget to cut about an inch more to have room for sewing. Remember to measure with the zipper as well, so you don’t make it wider than your zipper is.

Step 2

Zig zag around the fabric so it won’t fray. Then fold it two times inwards and sew it. Folding it might not me necessary but this fabric was fraying a lot.

Step 3

Now it’s time for the zipper! After reading a lot of articles on how to sew a zipper I’ve noticed that my way isn’t really “by the book”. I would call this a shortcut, but it works really well! Pin it on the fabric and just sew along the whole zipper. The zipper should face down towards the fabric. Do that on both sides!

Step 4

Pin the fabric together on the sides, and sew the packing cubes together.

Step 5

Remove the old zipper handle. Add the eyelet and the pendant and then close the eyelet.

Step 6

Now it’s time for the letters! How to do this depends on which letters you got. I recommend you to read the instructions on the letter, and follow them!

And here we have them! I can tell you it gets a lot more fun packing when you have these beauties! My only problem is that I’m traveling with a really small suitcase.. Do you have any ideas on how to pack smart? Would love to have your ideas if you have any! Or maybe I just have to skip packing more than three pair shoes for a weekend… 🙂

And oh, I have made packing cubes before, that I’ve used on EVERY trip since, you can find them here. Wish you all a great weekend!
